Mom & I got married in Rockville, MD in November ’81. We were on a business trip to Washington, D.C. and had known each other only six months. We hadn’t told anyone beforehand. I believe the name of the person who married us was Bonnie, the clerk at the local courthouse. There was a wedding group of about ten people waiting after us, and since Mom and I were alone, we needed to borrow a couple of them as the witnesses. After the ceremony we drove to Toms River, NJ to spend our honeymoon night at Nana & Grandad’s rented house. It was bright cold Fall day. On the drive up we ate at McDonald’s – twice. When we got to Toms River and told Nana and Grandad, they were thrilled and asked me to carry Mom through the doorway. As we did so we looked down and saw Grandad on his knees taking a picture of us. Already giddy with what we have done, we erupted in laughter at this sight as he took the picture, and we have still that photo as a memory.
The next day we drove to South River to tell Mom’s family. It was Thanksgiving time, and they were all seated around the dinner table as we walked in: both parents, all four grandparents. Of course, I was scared ***less. But we got a warm reception. Mimi said “We would have given you a big Polish wedding!” and Grandfather simply shook my hand and congratulated us before going back to his football game.
Twenty-eight years later, here we still are! I wish the same happiness (if not the same wedding ceremony) to a lovely young couple from San Diego.
